Chevron half square triangles

These half square triangles are so much fun!  There are soooo many different patterns you can make with them and the color options are endless.  I made a simple and sweet little baby quilt.

What you will need to make chevrons:

  • Fabric...your color choice! amount depends on project.  I used 110 five inch square triangles to make  49"L X 40"W baby quilt.  You can make anything from throw pillows to quilts.  Remember to include enough fabric for backing if you are making a quilt.
  • scissors or rotary cutters
  • ruler
  • thread
  • sharp pencil

Diagram 1
Start by cutting 5 inch squares of fabric.  I used one neutral with one color.  Put RIGHT sides together and fit together.  With fabrics together line corner to corner.  I line my ruler up with a line on my cutting mat.  (diagram 1)  I use a sharp pencil and draw a line down the middle.  Do all of your squares this way.

Next you need to start sewing!  You will need to stitch a 1/4 inch from the line you drew with pencil. (diagram 2)  On both sides of the line. You can make a continuous strip of squares by feeding squares under foot without stopping.  (this is so much fun and makes a long chain of squares pictured below)

Once you have as many squares as you will use for your project snip squares from chain. Line square on cutting mat and use straight line ruler to cut from corner to corner. (diagram 3)

Use your finger to press open triangle. You can continue until all your squares are cut and open and use a hot iron to press seams open. (I don't use steam)  I trim the little edge of the corners off and remeasure to be a bit more accurate.  Now the real fun begins!!!  There are so many variations with the half square triangle.  I shared a few of them with you.
